I had this problem on a Toshiba Tecra A10-104 using Linux mint 17.3 XFCE (based
on U14.04) with Intel GM45 onboard graphics.
Updating from a 3.x kernel to the latest 4.4 one fixed the problem for me, with
no regressions found so far. :)

Hi all,
I found this bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1543769#c69
and this patch seems to solve the backlight problem (and the ELAN jercky
touchpad as well)
I don't know how to compile the kernel with this patch.
maybe someone can build the kernel for me to test on my laptop

Thank you for information. nvidia-driver-390 driver have problems too, i hope
you can fix before the 18.04 final release.

Last question; mutter 3.28.1 not released when it will release and will you put
in 18.04?
Also, if anyone can reproduce the problem again, do you find nouveau
errors in your kernel log around the time of the missing rendering?
Run 'dmesg' to see it all.

I've installed and tested Norbert's PPA and it works great. I have
ALT+SHIFT set as the layout switch shortcut and with the PPA I can now
use Eclipse's ALT+SHIFT+ keyboard shortcuts.
Kudos Norbert!
