thanks for your comment. It's been a while since I've reported this bug.
Luckily I've been able to resolve it by switching over to the open-
source radeon drivers. Haven't had a crash of this sort (or any X.org
crash for that matter) for almost a year now!

There are some packages that were swapped out for 14.10 (especially
related to power management) that you don't get if you do an upgrade
install.

This is not a bug in light-locker, I removed the package from my system
and it has not helped.
