Seems you are having the same problem as I meet in Ubuntu 14.10 beta. I
tried the latest driver from AMD website, latest in Ubuntu repo, none of
them works. Drivers can be installed just fine, xorg.conf generated,
but system can't boot. I can boot with radeon driver, or with fglrx-
core installe
The Mesa fix works for me.

my new radeon r7 260x. Today I updated the system and mesa went from
version 10.2.6-1ubuntu3 to 10.3.0-0ubuntu2, and the performance dropped

While I am using Ubuntu the x-server keeps freezing on me. I still can
hear sounds coming from open applications and when I click blindly
around, I get responses; but from my perspective everything is frozen in
place. I am able to work around this by pressing ctrl-alt-f2 whene

After logout, switching to another login screen or shutting down the
monitor brightness is set to its lowest level, making it rather hard to
read in bright environments. Pressing a brightness key once (up or down
does not matter) sets the monitor brightness to its highest leve
