Same here! Problem lies in this old video card. What I did:
Go to console (Ctrl + Alt + F1), login, then kill gdm, in my case,
lightdm:
sudo killall lightdm
Then, execute:
nvidia-xsettings
This will create a basic xorg.conf into /etc/X11.
Now, install Gnome Flashback, wich brings two options

Interestingly enough after purging everything and reinstalling a few
times (I even tried bumblebee again) it stated to work miraculously.

Re-installing the Intel Drivers through the Intel Graphics Installer [1]
seems to have solved the problem, some configuration files were probably
over-written during the update.
