...and apologies for bothering you: finally, everything seems to work after I
switched the DVI ports on the dock... So it might be a hardware problem, or the
software being confused and getting back in order after the config changed...
Anyway, I'm closing this
It's sending a completely garbage batchbuffer. It doesn't match either
the DDX or mesa (i965c), so I have no idea who emitted it. Can you
launch qmlscene under gdb and place a breakpoint on do_exec2() (in
libdrm_intel.so).

I'm on 12.04, fully up to date, and the issue still occurs, so where's the

Initially when I first ran into the issue I thought it was the Nvidia drivers
so I've tried all four versions available through 'Additional drivers'

It seems a really old issue.
I'm experiencing the same problem on Xubuntu 12.04 in 2014 and the listed
kernel link not exist anymore.
I confirm the svideo was working perfectly with windows xp, but i don't wanna
go back to that rubbish.

I confirm this too. I have Kubuntu 12.04, kept up to date.
The last update of nvidia-settings changed few things (e.g. instead of
"TwinView" the choice is called "xscreen 0") and it started to behave exactly
as Markus described - crash on Apply, works only with save+restart.
