Well this is odd. It's happened again today.
I played Minecraft at ~18:45 and now it's ~22:30 and it's broken. No
reboot inbetween, however I logged out and back in inbetween at ~19:15.
I did some updates earlier (lunch time)..

James Jones is the original author of the patch. I made a couple
modifications to it before attaching it -- some minor simplifications,
adding the config option, slightly better error resilience, and updating
it to work against the latest compiz source tree.

[gen3] Bad GPU performance whilst
As a reminder to myself, my only surviving non-pnv machine (915gm) has a
processor that does not support C-states (only speedstep). I tried the
patches and only keeping the CPU at maximum is sufficient to hit
glxgears vrefresh.

After an upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10, my unity desktop is
experiencing screen flickering and what appears to be some screen
tearing. Tearing may not be the correct term. I see random triangular
areas of the screen which display what appears to be a gray scale

I have discovered a side effect to this bug that implies a security
vulnerability.
You are in graphical tty7 and select the "switch user" option.
The xserver gets stuck trying to open a new graphical tty. You have black
screen on tty8. You cannot go back to tty7.
Still you can open a non-graphic
Confirmed on ubuntu 14.04 development.
