Even native Linux games (e.g Nexius) with normal settings are seeing
this error. Currently I am using oibaf ppa, but I had this problem
since ubuntu 13.04 fresh install. Starting from some versions of mesa
(9.1) this error has been persistent. It also causes extreme heating.
The problem with Virtual Machines appears to be in the way the launcher
(when hidden) is displayed on 12.04 and higher. On 12.04, behaviour has
changed. We have now to press the pointer "out of the screen" in order
to display it.

Mir won't be used at all with the proprietary drivers. Ubuntu should
fall back to traditional X. So it's not going to "work" in fglrx, just
worked around.

Eh the freezes started occurring again, with the older kernel and very
frequently too. I thought I was on to something. Oh well.
Also I notice that after rebooting it takes a little while before the
freezes start
