I have same issue ..turns out the brightness setting is not saved and is 0
every time I boot.
If I use the Fn + brightness Up key on every boot then I can see the screen
again.

I had the same problem on my Xubuntu 12.04 too, but only for new created
accounts, not for my existing one. After some hours of trial and error
I've got the one file, which made the difference: It was
~/.cache/sessions/xfce4-session-MYCOMPUTERNAME:0 . So simply saving the
desktop session once solve
Actually, I guess it's not even non-rectangular configurations that
cause this issue - after changing them to a wide rectangular
configuration, DVI-1 still displays the region from 1280x1024+0+0 (which
is now also displayed on the topmost screen), while xrandr still claims
