I'm still having this issue (2012-12-21 comment 609). Very annoying!
Freezes seem to be completely random, at the best my laptop has been
running fine longer than month, but for example during the past two
weeks, maybe ten freezes.
Yes, mouse not moving, keyboard not responding, no

on this machine, since the newest kernel updates the Nouveau driver

On my Acer TimelineX, I have the same problem as that described above.
However, it doesn't occur all of the time with the new 3.2.0-40-generic
x64 kernel. Sometimes it boots fine. About 3/4 of the time though the
screen shuts off.

I have to correct myself: Removing the multiarch packages helped, but
the default solver still wants to drop half of KDE while the aspcud
solver looks good:

This is actually caused by multiarch packages present. I fixed this by
manually removing the google-earth-stable:i386, teamviewer7:stable and
