I did some further testing and found that the X GPU freeze most often
occurs when the Docky app is being scrolled over. I remember seeing a
similar post mentioning that they were experiencing a GPU lockup/freeze
during transparency rendering (this would make sense with Docky).

after todays upgrades - I get a working x session, but no dash,
launcher, hud etc starts up. If I start any application from the
console displaying to :0 it does start up as expected.

When this occurs I'm also unable to use the ctrl-alt-F1 shortcut to
switch out of the X server and into a console. This is happening on two
of my machines. One a lenovo thinkpad with an Intel video chip, the

Regarding apport, the problem was a missing python package: python-
launchpadlib. I have run into another problem with apport: "TypeError:
'unicode' does not have the buffer interface". I will try and submit
more information when I get the time fix this.

I'm getting lockups a few times a day now on 12.10. From the syslog today I got:

So we have to live with this error for the next month, until raring has
been released?
Since I installed updates today, including kernel update 3.5.0-26.42, I
get every few seconds endless failures regarding the described problem.

NVIDIA® GeForce G 1
When I log into Xubuntu 13.04 running in a VMWare virutal machine my
xserver crashes and I end up at thelogin screen again. Normally logging
in works fine after the third attempt.
Is this the same issue you are / were having?

I must have missed that kernel in my testing, because I've been working with
linux-image-3.8.0-13-generic=3.8.0-13.23 for about 2 days now without any
problems (3.8.0-12 still had problems for me according to my notes).
