Same problem here on an AMD A4-5300 APU using the radeon driver.
Freezing particularly occurs when I scroll in firefox. Interestingly,
when using the chromium-browser instead, this problem occurs much less
frequently. As soon as the freeze occurs, unity does not respond to
mouse and keyboard input

no i915_error_state file then it's sounding like it's not "just" a GPU lockup
or xserver crash
even possible it's not X locking up
fm, check .xsession-errors, /var/crash for any .cra
I'm not seeing any errors in the logs, can you attach ~/.xsession-errors
after reproducing it in case it gives some info on why compiz hung?

Ok after continued testing, I come to the conclusion that the EXA SNA
difference does not make any difference here.
I had my system running on EXA crash 4 times in the last 30 minutes. But
there is nothing in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state not
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I have tested Edubuntu amd64 (5d76226ca924f5c5b4e683c4ac177a6b *precise-
dvd-amd64.iso 20130210), on VirtualBox.
1) I have started the system.
2) I have chosen the language.
3) I have clicked on "Try Edubuntu ..."
4) This system is started no graphics.

Completely fixed in raring (SNA), should in theory also be fixed in UXA.

It's a consequence of a hardware issue that prevents the GPU from
working correctly under VT'd. I would strongly advise not to use the
Ironlake GPU under these circumstances. Or try SNA in raring.

I don't see any log files from after setting that mode... So can you
grab the latest packages (raring), and if you can still reproduce this
escalate this to an upstream bug in bugs.freedesktop.org (dri/intel or
xorg/Drivers/intel)
