The problem seems to be with Unity 3D.
I run XFCE at the office and it doesn't freeze. The one at home runs
Unity 3D + compiz and it keeps freezing. Both computers have very
similar hardware, i7, nVidia, RAID0, etc.

after reading comment #27, I upgraded again from 11.10 to 12.04 and the problem
has disappeared almost completely.
Now there is no flickering during regular use of the laptop.
There is a small nuisance left though, don't know if it is worth fixing. Short
flickering appears during logging
