I've managed to get 11.10 installed on my Medion notebook but there are
a couple of problems.
I managed to get the OS installed by using the 'nomodeset' install time
parameter.
I also modified the grub load parameter and included the 'nomodeset'
parameter.

I forgot to mention that I also have W7 Home Premium (SP1) installed on the
notebook. W7 seems to be running as one would expect.

X does have a panning functionality. It's unfortunately buggy when used
with unity so not something that could be easily switched on, but

The drm error messages are pointing to a fault in the kernel, so I'll
close out the task against the 2D X driver.
The message "*ERROR* invalid framebuffer id" is innocuous and not
related to the freezing issue.

Continuing on from my last post. After a reboot my mouse resumed correct
left-handed operation without my having to go back into the system
settings.
Here is my xlist after the reboot with my mouse working: (but it looks
identical to the non-working state)

Acutally it doesn't work in lucid.
Every now and then my system reverts to right handed.
When in a non-working state my xinput looks like this:
xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointerid=4[slave
That fix has been in place for years. Lots of hardware would likely
break if it was reverted.
Rather, it will need to be massaged a bit to not cause whatever issue
you're seeing.
