I've been thinking that compiz needs an option, probably in the opengl
plugin, to graphically highlight damage regions. Or even to
automatically diff successive frames and highlight where the screen is
changing outside of the damage region. It would make diagnosing bugs
like this far easier.

Confirmed - and I find this very annoying because I can't play quakelive
in linux anymore (weapons binded in mouseup and mousedown) as scroll
just doesn't respond most of the time. Thought my mouse broke.. but
works perfectly in Windows.

I disabled XVideo from xorg.conf and now I can play videos smoothly
without any kind of crash. Is there any collateral effect by disabling
XVideo?

I think you're using unity 3d by "accident", which is now possible with
the new llvmpipe software rasterizer. Try choosing the unity-2d session
from the login screen, does it work normally?
