different C compiler perhaps?
This doesn't look to actually be an nvidia bug (or even dkms really),

I have exactly the same problem. I fear TS that fix above is not really
a fix. According to my research the problem si in the driver itself. The
only workaround is to use opensource driver or to disable amd graphics
and then use open source driver for intel graphics. Either way it is not
expected b
The reporter worked around the issue by using open-source radeon drivers
and has requested the bug be closed. I am marking it incomplete in case
anyone wants to contribute more information.

I have a similar problem with 12.04 alpha 1, where the screen goes black
during boot when X starts when running on a Toshiba Qosmio x505-898
Notebook with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics card. After the screen
goes black the only option is to hold the power button down for four
seconds to force
The fglrx-installer is the version that is tested with the alphas/betas
of the Ubuntu release. It generally keeps the fglrx/Catalyst used during
testing. The fglrx-installer-updates is used to get newer versions of
Catalyst.
