The facts:
Xorg freezes.
No display corruption
Mouse moves but does not change like it should (for example when over text).
Alt+SysRQ+R, then Alt+SysRQ+K kills X and lets me log in again.
Happens only with Unity, not unaccelerated environments.
Using Neauvou driver on 11.10.

Closing the lid does shut the display off completely, so I think the
issue is in the method used by the power manager to put the display to
sleep after idle.

This bug can probably be closed. The monitor in question died, and I
since upgraded to Oneiric and replaced the monitor with another. I have
a dual screen setup with two Acer monitors connected to the same video
outputs and everything seems to be working fine.

Update: I reinstalled Ubuntu, and switched to 32 bit. The problem is

a few seconds (the mouse still moves, but everything else is dead), then
everything turns black for a second, and then it all goes back to
