Top area of screen black when
Sorry, i forgot to add that i'm running Ubuntu 11.10. I've tried 11.04,
10.10 & even 10.04 but the same thing happened - graphical corruption,
even when booting from Live CD. I've checked the ISO's & they're all
good. I've used them to install Ubuntu in Intel-based laptops &
experienced no problem

I experienced the same behaviour (reducing window size would eventually
reveal window content) in 11.04. In 11.10 unity hardly works at all...
all windows are white.

Small addition to the blank window situation... If I reduce the size of
the affected window gradually, the content eventually returns.
Unfortunately to get this to happen the window has to be way-below
optimum size and the problem comes back as soon as the window is
expanded beyond its threshold si
@gadepall, it seems like you might have been temporarily unable to reach
the required servers, or forgotten to configure the repository properly.
Please try:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vanvugt/unity

I noticed in Ubuntu 11.10 when you return to your pc with a stuck
screen, if you press CTRL + ALT + F1 and then CTRL + ALT + F7, it
returns you to the normal unlock screen, where you type your password
and the screen is unlocked all is well.

thanks for your reply. I upgraded to oneiric and I find that the problem
is fixed. In particular, after a few days of testing, I can confirm
that:
1) the laptop can boot properly when docked (no more X freezes)
2) the monitor preferences appled works ok and appears to be stable (no more
Hanine, No I think I get the full screen resolution of the external
display. I'm unable to try it just now.

I'm running 10.04, and just tried installing gnustep with the dev tools,
as well as cenon. ProjectCenter segfaults as soon as you click the
toolbox icon it puts up. Note that Gorm segfaults after failing to find
a bunch of fonts; however note the Exception at the end of the listing.
