After this morning's extensive updates I rebooted my computer and found
that X seems to now have crashed on this system. I have included a
photograph as an attachment. I then logged in and logged out and the
problem remained, although slightly more psychedelic this time! (
That's strange. The fix [1] is definitely in upstream compiz [2] and has
been for a couple of weeks. But it's missing from the "core-0.9.6"
release [3] and missing in the latest snapshots pulled into oneiric [4].
Sam, Didier, any idea why this fix didn't get pulled into "core-0.9.6"
or oneiric?

clean install. It only affected my USB mouse, not my touchpad. Turning

I don't think unsetting the valuator is necessary. The mask is zero'd on
every evdev sync event, and only new values are set. I think this is
really due to the axis swapping property being set. See my next comment

Unity 2D works fine. When trying to login under Unity, I can see windows
being created (for example by opening the screens overview), but nothing
appears on the desktop. The unity dock and top menubar are working
though.

@Omar How can you set this to fix released if it is not completely

Tried the oneiric beta2 x64 live desktop. The video corruption is
slightly less, but the unity bar is still invisible and applications
don't display properly. Next test: text mode install, nvidia binary
driver.
