Thanks, Joakim. On the contrary, that's quite interesting. The first
four bytes should never be all 0xff if the GPU is configured correctly
by the kernel. If the kernel has misconfigured the GPU in such a way
that it cannot respond to register reads, the driver has no hope of
working.

Like I said. I don't have this problem on this box or my 4 other's. I
do have other 2 test boxs that are currently running Oneiric Ocelot
11.10 that I could pull down to reinstall 11.04 and recreate this
problem with various hardware (Intel or AMD CPU's; nvidia, ati or intel
video chipsets)... Or
Fresh install from the kubuntu alternate install cd.
I can both confirm the issue with the nvidia-driver and konsole/gnome terminal
as well as confirm the --notransparency workaround working. Thanks a ton for
this workaround, it'll do well to time me over until nvidia releases a fix.

The behavior I saw before shift, ctrl stopped working was that all
keyboard events and the mouse state were captured. The mouse moved, but
stayed as the guest OS's mouse icon (vs Kubuntu's). I could not get to
a local console and had to remotely kill the vmplayer process to get
back any control.
Adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=text to /etc/default/grub tries to over-ride the
variable set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode in 10_linux where GNU says that
if set in the/etc/defau;t/grub :

Set to `text' to force the Linux kernel to boot in normal text

Seems like the frequency is lower but still happens on 11.04.
After one week with Natty it only happened once.

I am trying to run apport-collect, but so far it seems to be doing
nothing (no feedback, errors, CPU usage or hard drive usage). The stack

I investigate my problem and find bad app. It was Avant Window Navigator. I
removed AWN and installed Cairo-Doc. Now Xorg works fine. Very fine.

This happens exactly to me, and mine is an ALPS device as well. Vertical
side scrolling doesn't work, and after suspend, pointer is erratic,
clicking is erratic, all kinds of problems. I haven't tried holding
control, will next time.

At boot, the radeon driver crash with a null pointer exception
