This bug affected me too. I got my Natty beta 1 fresh installed
yesterday, at first I feel my hardware become hotter than they are in
Maverick. As lm-sensors results, CPU temp is now around 64-70 and GPU is
around 70-72 at idle, this kills my hand. I think this is about Unity 3D
related issue.

I have to use a flashlight to see the display, the backlight isn't on. I
have tried every single setting to turn on the backlight and it isn't
working... I am using a emachines E725 laptop. Everything else works
fine, except for the screen backlight
I recorded this video to see if anyone in #ubuntu+1 was having the same
problem with ATI on Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1. It doesn't add much to the bug
report other than illustrating the black box thing that John, Tushar and
Guilluame describe above.

Actually, I'm not sure if this is correlated with the choice of display
connecter. It worked once over vga, but when I tried it again I just
got the black screen with white cursor, on another attempt the screen
just showed "auto adjustment in progress", and one more time it just
showed flickering

After installing the nvidia proprietary driver, the display would freeze
at the point when the top bar was loaded, and a dialog requesting the

I followed the instructions and updating from the unity daily PPA
resolved the issues with corrupted black windows on my HD 6870 with
proprietary fglrx. Wow unity is a shock! Pleasantly surprised! :-)

Do this steps to prevent this bug:
first after the initial installation, open up a terminal and type in
this:
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.c
btw, i think you are mixing up two issues:
- the latencytop kernel trace is completely unrelated to the issue (it is
related to drm, not to the tracing subsystem)

I am also experiencing something similar with an 10.10->11.04 upgrade .
I tried changing to 'Driver "ati"' in the config (as suggested above)
but the screen then becomes unusable (before I was at least able to
access the physical terminals).
