On Maverick I was getting several hundred wakeups per second on the
stock kernel (2.6.35-something), almost all from the load balancing

Well, the workaround would be to use -nouveau with the experimental 3d
mesa driver. But YMMV... that is unsupported and is a bit hit-or-miss
for some people.
Another thing to try would be to uninstall and re-install -nvidia, which

nouveau use 1/4 screen console
The external monitor works properly in Classic Desktop, no effect.
However... by simply pressing any key, the configuration switches to the
next available one! Luckily enough, this happens only once. So for
instance if you would like external monitor alone, you have to toggle
until netbook monitor
This problem appeared in 2.6.32 Kernel.
Beginning with 2.6.37 Kernel this is solved.
I observe increased battery life (+15-20%) in my old laptop.

I can confirm this bug using Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Compaq 6715s with a
Radeon X1200. The screen freezes except the cursor. In tty(x) the above
posted error message keeps rolling. Me as well I had the impression this

back to the ubuntu 2.6.35 tree...

@Captain Chaos: To keep it short: These ticks are imposed by the Linux
Kernel while trying to shift & balance the workload over the available
CPU cores. The problem here is, that these "ticks" occur during idling
phases and therefore inhibit the CPUs to fall into their power-saving
