When this happens attaching gdb to compiz shows it is stuck waiting in a
call to glXWaitVideoSyncSGI so it's not going to be a compiz issue here.
Upgrading to 2.6.38 didn't solve it, I still get this every other day or
so. Next time it happens I'll see if I can get any info. Apport doesn't
collect
Alright, thanks, I'll close it. Typically apport catches freezes and
pops up a report dialog, so if the freezes come back it's best to just
go ahead and file a new bug report that way.
So, sounds like your freeze may have fallen into category #4. Perhaps
upgrading from .37 to .38 resolved it.

Freeze after login wit
I do not think I am still experiencing this particular issue. I have
been experience a freeze on alt-tab at times, but I can switch to VT,
kill compiz, and then use unity --reset to get back to work. I chalked
this up to a compiz bug. I have updated today, and will log a bug report
for that freeze

Weird that i did my full update it removed the nvidia driver and the
nouveau driver doesn't work for kdm or gdm. So i guess i need to either

Reproduce the issue, log in, and with the system frozen collect the
output of dmesg, your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and your /var/log/kern.log.
Also, avivotool can be used to assist in debugging this issue.

Same issue on my side. Just bought a new laptop: Lenovo G550, installed
Ubuntu 10.10 and am facing issue as above: while it is not all the
times, it very often (50% of time?) runs into mode where until I move
mouse or press a key the computer completely freezes (does completely
nothing, e.g. flash

I still get a black screen when removing quiet splah and adding
vesafb.anything=1 as kernel parameters. Xorg.log is attached, 29.900 is
when I Ctrl+Alt+F1 to see if that works on the tty (and it doesn't work
either). The screen is turned on but black, it's not off.
Note that it kind of works when
