When this happens attaching gdb to compiz shows it is stuck waiting in a call to glXWaitVideoSyncSGI so it's not going to be a compiz issue here. Upgrading to 2.6.38 didn't solve it, I still get this every other day or so. Next time it happens I'll see if I can get any info. Apport doesn't collect

I still get a black screen when removing quiet splah and adding vesafb.anything=1 as kernel parameters. Xorg.log is attached, 29.900 is when I Ctrl+Alt+F1 to see if that works on the tty (and it doesn't work either). The screen is turned on but black, it's not off. Note that it kind of works when
