I've experimented the same Error with i915 and radeon module loaded together,
and "solved" it by blacklisting radeon module.
add a file en /etc/modprobe.d with a .conf name (ex:
custom-blacklist-radeon.conf)
and write into: blacklist radeon
or execute:
echo "blacklist radeon" | sudo tee

Fine once I've unplugged and plugged it back in.
This has been happening for a while actually - but I rarely reboot my

I guess the problem is caused bei xserver-xorg-video-intel. By removing
this package and only using the xserver-xorg-video-i740 the FN-Key works
without chrashing. But without xserver-xorg-video-intel, the resolution
of webpages is in bad quality and also I couldn`t acitvate any visuell
effects.

I just tried to install the latest stable release of the
2.6.37-amd64-Kernel in Lucid via terminal when the error-GUI showed up
and read that the package nvidia-current wasn't able to be installed.
