I have an old IBM i1300-1171 Thinkpad with a Silicon Motion SM712 LynxEM+ video
controller with the same problem.
It appears that the video memory is overrunning and causing horizontal
displacement of some pixels after being upgraded to ubuntu 10.04.

This is really annoying. Emacs buffer text is messed by random color and
unreadable. ( NVIDIA-180 driver, Compiz enabled)
I don't want to disable Compiz visual effects because transparency and expose
are very useful.
My workaround:
get old NVIDIA driver (version 173) and install it manually.

This is some maybe-not-relevant info: I thought I had the same problem,
and while looking for solutions on the net I stumbled upon
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20830. Extrapolating the workaround
suggested there, I added
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-s

Vish, hmm there's a lot of error messages in those logs but looking
through them I'm not seeing an actual X.org error message popping out.
You may be more familiar with unity's standard error message output than
I - what error message is anomalous that should be looked at from an X
perspective?
