Due to hardware problem, I had to quit using the Samsung Syncmaster monitor.
I've changed it to an IBM E74 model. Since then the problem mentioned got
worst, since I could not even login to X, (I filed Bug #586090). People
helping out there suggested, just like in this bug, to install current
Rafael: As you can see above, this bug has been fixed. Please report a
new bug.

Finally I installed Ubuntu 9.10. Karmic strangely, doesn't give me those
white disturbing lines and after installing the FGLRX driver through
"Hardware drivers" I can at least enable compiz effects, however they
don't work in accordance with the card's performance anyway.

I ran into this problem with xdm and xinit, so I tried switching to SLiM
(Simple Login Manager - http://slim.berlios.de/), but I ran into the
same problem. It works great, if I've run GDM first, but it fails
otherwise. I would like to use something other than GDM.

These patches are good if it provide a relief to the bug reporter and
the affects people but are not the correct FIX. When this touchpad can
support multitouch emulation should not be recomended. The bug is in the
kernel instead which recognises that the touchpad doesn't support
multitouch instead.

packages, and "hot-fix" them for this purpose with:

Think I've got the same problem, I will edit grub ASAP. Using nouveau as
my driver I tested the following:
Normal Lucid: System hang after startx.
Lucid with "xorg-edgers" PPA: System hang after startx.
Lucid with "xorg-edgers" and "kernel-ppa" PPAs: System hang after startx and
in recovery mode
