The touchpad not recognized correctly is a kernel problem. If you do
dual-boot what the other OS reports the touchpad as? Since it is
detected as Logitech by linux kernel it might actually be elantech, but
it is hard to be sure.

I do not have a mouse attached to the laptop. At one point since owning
this laptop I did attach an external, wireless USB mouse/keyboard (by
Logitech). I'm not sure if that explains why those entries might exist.
None of the files I've attached throughout this bug did I have that
external keyboar

I installed Kubuntu Maverick alpha 2, then installed the

now lights up. The built-in keyboard and trackpad are not responsive,
but a USB mouse and keyboard work. (The built-in keyboard did work in
alpha-2's console before ins

screen. A small regression: when booted with "nomodeset", X does not

/etc/X11/xorg.conf. I will modify this file which you can use in your
system to force load the synaptics module...
