remembered that this bug appeared not the day I did apt-get upgrade but
two days later. The last thing I did before this bug appeared was to
enable the auto-hide feature of the KDE panel :

I have an Acer Aspire 1420p and experienced the same issues. Following
the advice in bug #501843, I added "i8042.reset i8042.nomux" to my
kernel command line and now the touchpad is working perfectly.

I have the same problem when I try to use the second ATI 4670 card in a
system with two of these cards. With the first one alone it works just
fine. This is 10.4 64 bit with fglrx. The message in Xorg.1.log is:

configuration before too.

I don't have two screens so can't reproduce a crash that way. Apart from
the user-switcher app causing the crash, the only other time I've seen
it is after a normal (first user) logout - when X re-initializes it
just hangs using 100% CPU before the gdm login window appears.

It is somewhat discomforting that an error in gnusound terminates the
Gnome session. I looked into this and found that gnusound defines an
elaborate signal handler, probably with the intention to save as much of
the user's ongoing work as possible. The code is contained in the
"emergency.c" module.
This happens to me as well with 10.04 on a Dell M6500 with an ATI
FirePro M7740 graphics card.
