SInce it appears to be an Intel driver issue, I booted into recovery
mode and deleted:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

I've kept UBUNTU 10.04 running for about 2 days.
I noticed that the xorg process consumes much more memory than 9.10 did on the
very same hardware environment. On 9.10, xorg consumes about 70M around and it
is about 10 times than that now on 10.04.

I can confirm that I am seeing exactly the same thing with my Radeon
9200 in the latest Lucid (dist-upgraded this evening, the 28th of
March). No compiz unless KMS is turned off. Even then, it is
substantially slower than it was with Karmic. Indeed, non-composite 2D
has degraded substantially too:
Removing the HDMI cable still fails to cause a reconfiguration. The
second screen stays active until you use Monitor preferences which then
detects the change. 'Apply' then switches the second screen off.
Still no HDMI available unless the cable is attached when the bios
initialises.

/nvidia-current/libGL.so.1. Mesa's is located at
/usr/lib/mesa/libGL.so.1. If it was trying to use mesa then the drivers

Usually these problems are specific to the TV you are using. When you
try to use a 1920x1080i mode the TV is probably enabling overscan
automatically because it is a TV resolution and not enabling it for the
1360x768p native resolution. Your TV should have an option in the menus
to disable overscan

Ah, ok. I saw that buried in the regular /usr/lib/ and I guess it
didn't occur to me that it would be that way under /usr/lib32. I didn't
get a chance to verify that because I ended up installing a different os
on my development machine so I wouldn't have to re-assign the library
files to all app
Thank You for your response, but as I said in my original post,
Installing using the nvidia-current package causes the system to crash
during bootup. This is after removing all traces of the binary nvidia
driver from the website, and all traces of nouveau. The crash appears to
occur before any log

Installing drivers from nvidia.com is not a supported way to install
them and will not work like you said at the moment because of the
extensive changes done to the packaging in lucid. 195.36.15 is available
through the package manager as nvidia-current, and you can activate it
through hardware dri
