AFAIK, this issue still occurs with Compiz disabled or not installed at
all (at least, it affects my system that way).
The temporary fix is to download and run the fixmtrr.sh script [1] as

I have an MSI Wind U90X 037EU netbook with an Intel card, I had
previously Jaunty Ubuntu Netbook Remix, I upgraded to Karmic. After the
upgrade the screen flickered. After login, I opened "Display", I did not
set anything since every setting was ok , so I just pressed the OK,
I have a MSI MS-1223 (PR201) laptop, which has an Intel GMA X4500
graphics chip, with Ubuntu 9.04 (32-bit) on it.
I fixed the choppy fullscreen Flash playback as follows:

This is probably not good news, but... I uninstalled xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics . Things got better... and worse. Things got "better" meaning
that now the delay between the finger movement and the actual mouse

I got the 180 (?) drivers to work. This is haw I did it (in desperation)
I used synaptic and removed anything I could find under a search for
nvidia. On reboot I had nothing in hardware drivers (said no drivers in
use). I then used the synaptic to install the 190 drivers, I am not sure

I'm waiting too 2.6.31-5 has same problem. Intel 865. Display
Corruption begins almost immediately during boot process for me. Never
stops. In order to be usable in grub I select 2.6.31-2. Problem
started for me w/ 2.6.31-3.
