Somehow, the setting for headphones had gotten muted. In poking
around, I found a setting in the Sounds Settings under the sound menu

upgraded to 12.04 (which I like a lot) but has now resumed the wrong
behavior. All was fine a couple of days ago, but isn't now.
I've seen some suggestions of fixes around the net, but they seem to

Windows several times, both the WiFi and the sound are working
correctly under Ubuntu. No idea why it stopped working, why it started
