Well first off does your Mic work on things like the sound recorder?
If yes then it's only the skype settings that need changing (I had the
same issue on my eeepc)
* Load up skype
* Right click on the icon in the top right of your panel & click 'Options'
* Choose the 'Sound Devices' s

1) Is it possible to roll back an update? I broke a perfectly
functioning machine but allowing it to update (the kernal is now
xx-23) and now no sound.
2) Does any one have experience with the paid for support offered by
Canonical? Is it worth the cost?

right click on the .run file. change permissions to allow to open as an
executable file (can't remember the exact terminology) but there is a check box

If your running jaunty you have the latest version in the repo, if not

I have a Macbook 3.1 and I'm nearly about to press the upgrade button (I'm
upgrading a test PC to see how it affects sound and Samba in particular). I
have it dual booting with leopard so I'm perhaps in a better position if it
goes wrong. I'll report back how it goes.

I believe your card (like mine) is no longer supported by the proprietary
fglrx drivers. I'm not sure if it is supported by the Open Source ATI
drivers, but you pop in a copy of Jaunty and find out ;-)

logging into the newly installed system (and I've done this twice
now) I find that the server is running a generic rather than a server
kernel. Running sudo apt-get install linux-server and rebooting
doesn't seem to replace the kernel either.
