You can control the mouse with the menu arrows as long as your phone has
that function. I'm not sure about Nokias but I know that Sony Ericssons can.

Regarding the installation and GUI problems reported using 9.10, I've done 3
installs on Xubuntu. All have been problem-free at install time and runtime.
Like others, I suspect it is a Gnome or Compiz issue.
