It's an interesting thought but there was to have been something
available in 9.04 to enable Wacom tablet buttons to be programmed within
the Hal setup. From what I read, this did not happen due to lack of time

Taking note of all the helpful advice I was given I have successfully
installed 8.04.2 my thanks to all. Now, I hope that I will be able to go
ahead and set up to get the Bamboo to work as it should. Before I go
along too many blind alleys 'words of wisdom' would be very much
appreciated.

Yes, your old xorg.conf has got all the normal wacom stuff commented out
(but it looks as though it never had the 'pad' section that makes the
circular pad work).

I am beginning to feel that I am going round in ever decreasing circles

Looking in Synaptic Package Manager I see that there is
xserver-xorg-input wacom-already installed but another, wacom-tools not
installed. Perhaps installing wacom-tools could be a way forward.
