I have to say that I didn't like Mint at all... took me ages to
reconfigure it so that it reverted to, effectively, a default Ubuntu.
In terms of Linux I think I'm a Ubuntu man through and through - not
really sure what Mint is trying to do but it's not my thing I'm
afraid.

I use mint (have for a bout a year) and yes you can install it from a
usb drive just like Ubuntu.

I have a USB stick on which i plan on dropping a Linuxmint/ubuntu iso...and
then boot/install from there!
