Have a look at the Ubuntu Laptop testing Wiki at

and see if your laptop is listed.
BTW I had success with older laptops using Xubuntu.

Hi Fredy,
Some people do find that the 'live cd' install does have problems with
certain hardware. In these cases it is recommended to use the
'alternate' cd.
For version 6.06 this can be downloaded from:
http://ubuntu-releases.datahop.it/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso
