I had that problem awhile ago and it turned out to be compiz freewins.
Try turning that plugin off and see if that fixes it.

I'm so embarrassed now, as I posted your 'fix' in a thread I had
contributed to in Ubuntu Forums, and this morning I'm being thanked by
