[ubuntu-uk] icons

any idea why icons of installed programs don't show in the menus? eg Kwrite is there - I can run it from a terminal and yet it does not show. and, why when I installed Abiword (new version) I lost the icon for it, so there is a blank in the menu, and it only shows Word Processor? being a new kid o
