[ubuntu-uk] Securely delete data

2012-11-15 Thread David Smith
Supposing I have a netbook loaded with Xubuntu that I want to sell on (shameless plug, eBay item 290811097220). If it was running a Microsoft OS, I'd create a new user, remove the old one, look around for and delete any data lurking in the root and find an app (CCleaner for example) that'd do m

[ubuntu-uk] Sessions in Xubuntu

2012-08-08 Thread David Smith
This niggling little irk is spoiling my otherwise sublime Xubuntu experience - sessions in Xubuntu start with a terminal window, Google Chrome and 5 or 6 Cairo-docks in the same location each time. I'm sure I've done something in the past to save sessions but I'm sure that I have un-set that se

[ubuntu-uk] Steam fears Win8 - proposes Linux

2012-07-31 Thread David Smith
This article on the BBC raised my eyebrows - in a good way. In short, Steam fear Windows 8 becoming locked-in, I suppose like Apple marketplace and may change platform. Considering how big a player the Valve owned Steam is, can only be a good thing for Linux distros. And would their first cho

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Problem installing

2012-05-01 Thread David Smith
Figured it out for myself!! Took a guess on it needing the proprietary nvidia drivers. With some trial and error, booted to recovery mode, enabled networking, ran the dpkg fixer (forget the exact name it gave it) which also applied all updates, dropped into a command prompt, and used jockey-t

[ubuntu-uk] Problem installing

2012-04-30 Thread David Smith
At the risk of someone having had a similar problem, I'm struggling to install Ubuntu on my desktop. My netbook accepted Xubuntu absolutely fine, and I am getting to grips it. My desktop however won't accept Ubuntu x86. I have tried with a CDROM and unetbootin, with the live CD and with the a

Re: [ubuntu-uk] really really off topic ....

2012-03-19 Thread David Smith
I would say if DOSbox doesn't do it for you, try installing Win '95 to VMWare Virtual Box or some such similar. That way, you could limit the amount of RAM allocated to your Win '95 installation (and you can run it within MSWin, Linux and others). Dave Smith -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com htt

[ubuntu-uk] Heres an idea (Was "Unity is not working")

2012-02-22 Thread David Smith
I have to agree with most being said about Unity and how it is such a jump from what we were used to. I understand the evolution of software, from one version to the next, but this felt like we were being forced to grow wings and webbed feet at the same time (no longer Linux for human beings).

[ubuntu-uk] Repairing a dualboot Ubuntu-XP system

2011-12-24 Thread David Smith
I have supplied a second hand PC to a friend, dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.10 from one HD. Somehow, he's made a mess of his XP and I need to do either a repair-over-the-top install or a full XP wipe and reload. Since it is the XP registry file that is corrupted, I suspect that I would need to

[ubuntu-uk] Wipe and load 10.10 to 10.11

2011-10-13 Thread David Smith
On my netbook, I use 10.10, the last version to run before Unity was introduced. Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but I liked Gnome desktop. If I was to go for a wipe and reload in the next coupla days, how easy is it to ditch Unity and switch back to Gnome desktop blinged up with CCSM?? Acer Aspir
