Thanks. Apparently, even though Skype wouldn't let me select alsa,
changing volume etc in alsamixer is reflected in Skype

Thanks so much - it certainly did help.
Apparently I had to force the upgrade to Alsa 1.0.23 and all is well now
... almost :)
