iTunes is a utility to talk to iPhones/iTouchen; it is not the _only_
way---just like Microsoft Win

I'm sorry it's not more integrated, but my first generation iPhone suffered
screen issues a while back...
OK no problem and good luck ;-)

Thanks guys, I'll try and get his laptop from him, use my wifi, get it
all set up (hopefully!) then return it to him, as I'd need the internet
to get the Ubuntu extras for playing mp3/dvd stuff...

Totally off topic, but I'd just thought I'd remind everyone that that
is also talk like a priate day :)

I have registered a SFD event for Bracknell for 2009 - September 19th.
Last year's event was a success and I hope to do even more this year.
I would be delighted if anyone can help - you will be very welcome.
Please let me know?

Yeah it's a shame that they didn't make it 'more' compatible with Linux
(I say more, but it technically isn't, but that's for another day ;-P)
Also, nice portraits on your website ;-)
I haven't run it in WINE, but I'm not sure it would work anyway:

A quick look at iTunes 8 (which is needed to sync iPod touches) in the
wine appdb comes up with

. Unfortuantly the reporter says that syncing with iPhones doesn't
work, so I'm also guessing that iPod touches won't either.
Thanks for the info folks.
I have an iPod Classic and use Amarok 1.4.x which is awesome. Shame
Amarok won't work with the iTouch.
Ok, what about running iTunes with WINE, would that work? Or must it be
a VM?
I don't mind setting all these things up for the guy, but if just one
thing happens,
Yeah the only blog posts I can see myself are from 2007:

IIRC there is a way to do it, I used to sync my iphone with amarok. From
memory, (Google will be your friend) the ubuntu package was called
ipod-convenience I think.
Apologies for top post, my phone doesn't give me any other option :-(

Sorry, I'm afraid not. The iPod touch firmware is encrypted in such a
way that it is very hard to get into it in the first place. I'm not
aware of any way of getting any library but iTunes to work. If
anything did work, it would have to be through windows (and I'd be

Thanks for the replies David and James. Things look hopeful then...
Is it possible to upload mp3's to the iTouch without iTunes (RhythmBox?
Since it comes with Ubuntu) as my colleague readily admits that iTunes
is 'rubbish' and 'hate[s] it with a passion'. :D

Yeah I have an iPhone 3G and my Dad has an iPod Touch (I think 2nd gen).
On 9.04, we have a VM of Windows XP, the only difficulties arise when
updating the firmware.
I found when I updated to 3.0.1 that when it goes into Recovery Mode,

I myself have a second gen iPod touch, and I believe that you can't do
much natively in ubuntu without delving deep into ssh (which isn't
ideal for anyone) What I've had to do is set up a virtual machine with
windows in it, and sync my iPod touch through iTunes in windows.

Hi all,
I have a work colleague who's fed up with Windows on his laptop (not
sure of the make/model I'm afriad) and is more than willing to give
Ubuntu a shot. But... he has a first generation iTouch (not jailbroken,
(jailbreaked?)) which he (obviously) wants to continue using.
Does Ubuntu 9.0

I have a new laptop with wifi and 9.04 running. I have various wifi
connections I use, including my home network with my server and desktop
machine.
Is it possible to automatically mount the shares on my home network when
my laptop uses the home network.
