I have experienced the sound disappearing from all my ubuntu intrepid
systems. not sure why. i followed the tutorial here

which fixed it.
its not that i don't know linux. just was in a hurry.

Next time the soundcard is locked, run this in Terminal:
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
It will list the applications currently using the sound. Paste the
output here, and we may be able to help out.
