I think the efforts that Future Publishing have done in the last 5-6 years have been pretty good... Live CD and book distributed through WHSmith with content pitched at the novice rather than the expert; mostly bits taken from Linux Format etc. but good nonetheless. Red Hat 9 had a good manual too
