I tried to manually start nmbd and I got the following:

My huge mistake, sorry for making you loose your time. I use to do
administrative tasks as root...
Here it goes:
root@kropotkin:~# /etc/init.d/nmbd start

Hello,
I changed permissions of dirs /var/lib/samba and /var/cache/samba to
0755 as indicated and the problem went away!
