and therefore better" reason is NOT compelling because it breaks Tomcat.
I say this because it doesn't work. I invite you to confirm it by doing

I noticed that this is fixed in Ubuntu 12.04, /etc/resolv.conf is now a
symlink to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf and /run is mounted as tmpfs so
it now works if /etc is mounted as readonly.
