This is because using 'ping ' attempts to look up a host using
DNS. Using 'smb:///' uses lmhosts. If you were to go to Windows
and type 'ping ' it would fail the same way.

Could you please test this again using the new gvfs, without "unix
extension = no" in the config file, and submit a new bug if this is
still a problem? To test with gvfs, simply go to the Places menu,
choose Connect to Server, and then fill in the information for your
Samba server.
