I verified your patch in Lucid-amd64 (by manually inserting your lines of code)
and can confirm: *it works*!
(apart from the portmap and rpc.statd issue, whuich still persists of course).
I used Clints proposal inserting these 2 lines after the mount commands:
/usr/bin/lsof -n | gre
Additional remark: I did not observe any noticeble delay of shutdown
with the patch.

insisting that you set initial passwords before proceeding. It would
like you to do:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'

I've also tried with 3 VMs each with 30G qcow2 and raw formatted drives,
still with no success in trying to reproduce.
Please give the full kvm command (and, if using libvirt, libvirt.xml
files) for the hosts which cause this problem. Are you using ecryptfs
to back the guest image files?

errors by running a modified script to use only 2 maverick VMs, one

I found that offering a new sql password or accepting the previous
password (via the dialog box) would not change the symptom. I've since
updated to 10.10, so that symptom is not apparent now.
