I tried both removing i with update-rc.d and removing it manually from
the rc?.d directories. I didn't see a need for removing the init.d
file.

Ok, sorry. I'm seeing this behaviour on my Jaunty installation, so
that's Apache version 2.2.11-2ubuntu2
However, this behaviour was also seen on Hardy and Intrepid (by me). I
just didn't report this bug back than.

Does it matter? I'm using the newest available version on Jaunty, but it
has happened to me before on all the older releases, I just didn't take
the time to report the bug.
