if you do want status, simplestreams does provide a callback (see
implementation of sstream-mirror --progress).
so if you need this in maas (not actually sure if you still do), then the hooks
are there in simplestream.s

Perhaps also sneakily prioritizing amd64 as an architecture and trusty
as a release, on the basis that once that's done "interesting stuff
should work" for most people and demo's can move forward.

Well, simplestreams does only *part* of the downloading: it downloads
all the ephemerals all right but the installer files are still
downloaded by MAAS' script (./scripts/maas-import-pxe-files).
