Thanks guys - as you say the upgrade appears to have worked and the response
from the 'team' unbelievable . I suppose there are several things I take from
this experience;
1. If the process of updating is still running even with 'error messages' - let
it.
2. Even while updating I had access to F
Sorry guys... in the attached: apt.log, main.log, main_pre_req.log and
term.log from directory /var/log/dist-upgrade/.

Public bug reported:
1. Ran Update Manager... it suggested update to Heron
2. All ran okay to point where it arrived at samba where it listed some
choices...
3. I chose to open shell and have a look... it opened in the terminal
4. I thought better of it and EXITed
5. Not a good scheme it seems .
