This morning, I encountered the exact same error and consequences as
posted above while trying to install the Sun Java runtime and plugin.
I'm using the 9.10 beta, i386 version. I just noticed that I
accidentally have Firefox 3.0 installed as well as 3.5. I'm not sure if
that could have affected it
I tried both removing i with update-rc.d and removing it manually from
the rc?.d directories. I didn't see a need for removing the init.d
file.
